I said I wouldn't but I did!

Schoolbit #2

Thursday, October 27, 2016

Via asked me for P60 this morning.

I asked, Why?

V: It's to pay Teacher Rachel.

Me: And why do you need to pay Teacher Rachel?

V: She asked me why I didn't go for recess. I said I didn't have baon. So she gave me P60 to buy in the canteen.

Arrrrrrghhhhh! She told Tita she did not want to bring any snacks for recess and now this!

So I gave her the P60 to pay her teacher.

Schoolbit #1

Since Grade 2 students are now allowed to go to the cafeteria at recess, Via was very excited. I thought it would be a good way to start teaching her about saving and budgeting her money. So I decided to give her a weekly allowance of P250 which is P50 per day. But out of that I expected her to save and to tithe. She was agreeable.

I was mortified one night when one parent (her friend Julia's mother) called me on Viber. She said she just wanted to let me know that Via asked for Julia's P100 and Julia gave it to her. I told her I didn't know and that I would talk to Via. She wasn't mad or anything, just wanted me to know. But I was really embarrassed.

While I was talking to Julia's mom, Via was very quiet and was hiding under her blanket. I guess she knew what the call was about. After finishing the call with Julia's mom, I pulled the blanket off Via to talk to her. She started crying. I told her I only wanted to ask her what happened. She just kept on crying and there was no talking to her so I left it at that. She soon drifted off to sleep.

The next day after school, she seemed fine and I really wanted to know the how, what, and why so I asked her again. She hid her face. I told her I just wanted to know. She then said, I will tell you but we will talk about it only this one time and never again. I promised her we will never talk about it again after this.

It was during recess, they were left in the classroom copying reminders in the memo notebook. She saw Julia open her wallet and it had two P100 bills. She asked for the P100 and Julia gave it to her. I asked why? She said she wanted the P100 because she already used up all her allowance for the week and it was only Tuesday. I asked if she forced Julia or anything. She said no. I said okay but reminded her what I kept on saying over and over to never, ever, ask money from other people or borrow anything. If you have to borrow a book or what, return it right away. She promised.

She knew it was wrong because she was ashamed. I hope the lesson stuck.

Study Struggles

Getting Via to develop good study habits has been really hard, Sometimes we're good, even laughing and joking, having fun while studying. Sometimes, it's a battle!

The last terrible study time battle we had ended with me screaming at the top of my voice and pinching her. (I know, bad mommy moment). She cried for like an hour but I didn't want to give in. I could see her peeking in the room but I pretended not to notice. She kept on throwing paper on the bed which I ignored. (I knew they would be Mom, I'm sorry notes). In the end she came inside the room and said she was sorry.

Me: Why are you crying Via?
V: Because you sounded so angry.
Me: I AM very angry!
(More sobbing)
Me: Okay Via, how do you want to study? How often and what time?
Via: 6 o'clock....
Me: All right. Let's do it everyday, 6 o'clock except weekends. Only on weekdays.
Via: Yay!
Me: But...if you have a test on a Monday, then we also study Sunday afternoon. Okay?
Via: Okay.

The next few days were sorta okay. Then semestral exams. I said we have to study everyday because this is the most important test of the year. We barely got started when she started acting up. Doodling, laying her head on the table, basically not doing anything.

I said, "that's it! You study when you want. I won't bug you about it. Put your things away. We're done." Then I got up and went to bed to read my book.

She sat there sniffling. After a while I heard furious scribbling which went on for about 20 minutes. Then she got up and handed me her notebook. She did her homework and wrote me a note.

I am sorry. Even when sometimes I cry like that it is just like you've given up on me, I sad seeing someone I really love just give up on me.
I hugged her and reassured her that I was not giving up on her but that moment I just felt tired that she was not interested in studying and need a rest. She understood and said she would try her best. The rest of the exam week went well with just a few hiccups.

Still, she did the work and sometimes it was even fun for both of us.

A Big Scare

Friday, October 21, 2016

Friday night I got home late because I participated in the badminton tournament at our office. I was looking forward to a hot shower and snuggling in bed to continue reading Robert Ludlum's Covert One series. Via was watching The Last Airbender cartoon series for the nth time. I asked her if she took her meds, seretide puff and Montelukast. She had a couple of asthma attacks this month so she's on medication for 30 days to control it. As I asked her, I looked at the box of Montelukast at the same time and saw it almost empty. I said, "Where are your medicines?" She shrugged her shoulders and said, "Don't know." I told her to look for it, maybe under the table, maybe it spilled. That was when she said, "Well, I ate them all. They were yummy!" At first I just stared at her. Then what she said sunk in and shouted, " What?!!!!" She repeated that it was yummy.

I called Daddy immediately to ask what him what to do. He said calmly to watch out for vomiting, headaches, nausea, etc. (I don't know how he was so calm when it's his daughter! Doctors! Bah!) If it happens, bring Via immediately to the ER. I was reassured by his calmness though so I proceeded to take a shower. After my shower though, doubt crept in and I decided to bring Via to the ER just the same. I told Via to get dressed.

It was almost 10 pm. We found a taxi and went to the ER in Medical City. We haven't been here in a while so I didn't know that the ER for children is now separate from the adults. Which is a good thing. We walked to the other side to the children's ER. We were immediately attended to. Via's vital signs were checked. Then we waited while they were contacting Poison Control. While waiting 2 more ER resident doctors chatted with Via as to why she took all the meds. She told them all the same thing, that is was yummy! After about 20 minutes, the first doctor came back and said that Montelukast was not high in toxicity. Via was to rest and drink lots of water to flush it out and that's it.

Whew! That's a load off my mind. I know Daddy was also not worried but I couldn't help myself. It would be different if her were here since he's a doctor but he's not. I felt better bringing Via to the ER. So we went home and went to bed. I was exhausted.

The next day, Via told me that while I was in the shower getting ready to go to the ER, she prayed to God that everything would be okay. At least that's the good thing. She is learning to trust and depend on God.

Kids Don't Lie

Sunday, July 24, 2016

At Via's classmate's birthday party yesterday during a Bring Me game...

Bring me 5 prettiest mommies!

Kids rushing, grabbing and dragging their mommies to the party host hoping to be one of the 5 and get a prize.

Via was just standing there ... watching.

I asked her, "Aren't you joining? Don't you want a prize?"She said, "No, I'll join other games."

Hmmmm she always joins games always dragging me in front for whatever games need mommies.

 Later after the party.......

I asked her, (because I couldn't let it daughter does not think I'm pretty!) Ha Ha Ha

Why didn't you join the prettiest mommy bring me game?.... What were you waiting for? Bring me the oldest mommy? (She always says I am the oldest Mommy among her classmates mommies)

Mom (her tone exasperated) you have short hair! How can short hair be pretty?!

Got it.

End of Summer - Wall Climbing and Food Trip

Tuesday, June 14, 2016

To close the summer vacation with a bang, Via and I went wall climbing with my friend Becky. She loved it! After doing the kiddie wall to test the waters, she immediately asked to do the adult walls and quickly progressed to the wall with auto bellay. I only made 3 or 4 climbs as I had an elbow injury which I did not want to aggravate. Via, however, went from wall to wall to wall...she couldn't get enough of it.

We also went on a foodtrip to Denlim's Kitchen in San Fernando, Pampanga, This was a yearly celebration with my friends. The trip was more than a year in the making as booking to Denlim's Kitchen was hard to get. He is usually booked a year in advance. It was worth it though. Via watched as Den Lim prepared each dish and asked lots of questions. Then she runs back to the table to tell us what the next dish will be.

To leave your mark at Denlim's Kitchen, write your name anywhere...... except the chopping block where one of our party wrote his name!

Our Food:

Bread n Spread (the spread is with "puso ng saging")

Summer Salad (with pinipig, walnuts, apples, singkamas, etc.)

Mussels 420 (420, as explained to us is April 20 when it was first served)

Shrimp Corrito

Broiled Salmon with Asparagus

Pasta Socorro

Caveman Shank

The super finale, Pugon Wrap (this was my favorite of all...super crispy liempo with buro and slice of tomato wrapped in lettuce)

Here's Den Lim preparing Caveman Shank before serving. It was all good and so worth it!

Looking forward to our next summer adventures!

Summer of 2016

Thursday, June 9, 2016

It seems to me that summer breaks are getting longer and longer. It's more than three months! I dread the time when Via's school decides to adapt the new school year from August to June. That will be 5-6 months break during the transition.

It's hard to find activities to occupy her during the summer. No matter what I have lined up, there are still days when there's nothing to do and she resorts to watching videos on YouTube. It's not like my own childhood when my Mother did not have to worry about how I would pass my time. I just spent the whole day outside the house playing with the neighborhood kids. It was a different time.

So what did she do this summer?

Guitar Lessons and Soccer Training

Swimming Lessons and Pilipino Camp in school

Badminton Training and Hip Hop Dance Workshop

Of course what is summer without going to the beach?

She learned to bike, attended birthday parties and visited Kidzania twice. I asked her which activity she enjoyed most in Kidzania. She said it was the Music Studio. She wants to be a rock star. Arrrgh!

She also finally got her yellow belt in Tae Kwon Do and represented her school at the Ateneo Football Festival.

Whew! I never had that much activity in my time. The most was a Personality Development Course when I was in high school and swimming lessons in Grade 2.

Tough Question #3

Tuesday, February 16, 2016

Mom, why did you and Daddy have S-E-X?

Thought bubble: What the fudge should I say??? I have to answer the question. I can't just ignore it! Think! Think! I can't take too long thinking about it.....hmmmm.....

Me: Well Via, when two people love each other, one way they express that love is through sex.

Via: Don't say it! Why are you saying S-E-X?

Me: What's wrong with saying sex?

Via: Eeeeeewwww, it makes me want to barf! So why did you and Daddy have S-E-X?

Me: I already told you. Sex is something God created for a man and a woman to express their love for each other. But...only after getting married because if it is before marriage, it is a sin.

Via: Tell me the story of how you met Daddy again...

Okay... (anything to get off that topic) :)

Chef the Twerp

Saturday, January 2, 2016

We were in the grocery the other day and Via saw this Maya cake flour with the Frozen princesses on the box. She thought it was pancake mix and we just discovered our mistake when we got home. So instead....she wanted to bake a cake. We followed the recipe on the back of the box of the Maya cake flour.

Here's the Twerp's masterpiece. Tadaaa....

Maya cake flour mix was especially made for kids. The recipe at the back even indicated which steps were kid friendly tasks. It was her idea to put marshmallows on top. We will have it for dessert after dinner. I'm sure it's going to be yummmmy!
