Lefty or Righty?

Sunday, February 5, 2012

According to babycenter.com, a child's preference for using her left or right hand can be evident as early as 6-9 months but definitely on her 3rd year, she will show which hand is dominant.  I have been watching this rather closely because Daddy is left-handed while I am right-handed.

Well Via is three years old now and I still cannot tell if she's going to be a lefty or a righty.  Until now she has been using both left and right hand although she seems to be using her left hand more when eating. The photo up there shows her using her left hand to color the picture. I sent it to P and said that that she seems to be left handed now. He came back saying, well she has a cookie in her right hand. That is still inconclusive. She does use both hand when drawing and coloring. When the other hand gets tired, she switches to the other. However, when we play badminton, she holds the racket mostly with her right hand.

Babycenter also said that in case the child seems to be ambidextrous, it will not be until the age of 5 or 6 when she decides to choose which hand will her the dominant one. And since Daddy is also ambidextrous, I guess we will have to wait a few more years. In the meantime, I am having fun finding out.

It would be fun if Via is like her Daddy and be ambidextrous! :)
